What's new on the menu today Grandpa?

Persimmons
Verdict: These persimmons are grown from my parents' garden. They had a lovely harvest this year. Here, Kong Kong (Grandpa) is letting Baby Bel suck on a slice of the sweet orange coloured fruit. Other times, we mash up the persimmon and add the juice to her morning cereal. When this is on the menu, we can hardly keep up with her. Baby Bel's mouth is often wide open before we can fill her spoon with more! 5/5

What's new on the menu Grandma?

Exotic Local Fruits
We wanted to let her try some local fruits, so...

Papaya with Cereal
Verdict: Baby Bel certainly loved the soft sweet orange flesh. 4/5

Durian
We let her try only a little of the King of Fruits as it's a very "heaty" fruit and Baby Bel was already finding the weather intolerable.

Verdict: I don't think she liked it very much. Will let her try it again when we're back in January. It would be unfathomable if she grew up disliking this when her mummy loves it so much! 1/5

YUM CHA!

After a very un-restful first day, I really wasn't looking forward to bring Baby Bel out. She'd awakened a few times, one of which was a 2hour marathon. But I'm glad we dragged ourselves out. It was really nice to see everyone again.

Hello Sandra, Glenda & Diana! You're all looking great!

"Hello, my name is Baby Bel, you must be Baby Chloé. You've grown a lot since we last met! Bet you'll be as tall as your Mummy and Daddy."

"Ooooh... I like your shoes, mine are getting a little worn out... must remember not to chew on it too much. Good thing Mummy bought chrome-free shoes!"

Everyone say Baby Bel! Er..I mean cheese!

Next it was off to CH's and Jo's place for a little tea. We had a lovely time catching up and tasting some delicious nougat.

Happy Father's Day

As we would already be in Singapore by then, we celebrated it a few days earlier. We went back to the same bistro that we celebrated Mother's Day. This time both of us had the club sandwich. Yes, the craving was still around. And we remembered the camera! Here's the adoring daughter, the doting father and me (in the reflection)

We proceeded to the Palais de Jardin for a walk after lunch. It was such a warm day! Baby Bel enjoyed the sunshine on her face...

for a little while... before ending in cries of demand to be whisked home for a bath and bed.

What's on the menu today Mummy?

Pea purée with potato
Verdict: This went down quite well, even if it wasn't a very smooth mixture. 3/5

Picard and Babycook

Excited by the claims of the other Message members that the Beaba Babycook makes cooking a no-brainer, I dragged poor husband and baby to Sauvel Natal... Yes, the place where you have to fight tooth and nail to snag a parking lot.

Of course there was none. As it's a favourite place for tow trucks to come to "escort" your illegally parked car for a holiday at your expense, I went in on my own to buy the appliance plus some other useful items for my venture into cooking for baby while hubby and baby snoozed in the car.

That night, I made apple purée. The apples are cored using this handy apple cutter from IKEA, peeled, then placed into the steam basket in the Babycook with the appropriate amount of water.

The apples are steamed to perfection, without me needing to hover and check. Cool!

When it's cooked, you just flip the switch to blend the apples into a purée. Easy peasy!

I also made 2 apple tarts for our dessert with the extra apple slices. There was also a surprise by product of the steaming process: a cup of sweet apple juice!

Less than half & hour from start to finish.

Since acquiring the Babycook, I've cooked sweet potatoes, apples, peas, apricots, mangos and courgettes for Baby Bel. The other foods that I've introduced her have been from Picard, a store that sells only HIGH QUALITY frozen food. These are from the Bio (Organic) range. The puréed vegetables are in little pellets so that you can defrost the exact amount that you need. Best of all, there's no added salt or sugar. 100% unadulterated sweet vegetables.

Ooooh how I love Picard, both for her, and for us. When we're too lazy to cook. Or when we want freshly baked pain au chocolat in the morning. Or when we want a fondant au chocolat at 11pm at night. Or when we're entertaining and realise that we need more finger food. Makes me wish we had a bigger freezer!

What's new on the menu today Mummy?

Homemade Apricot and apple purée with cereal
Verdict: This was a winner. Apricots were a little sour, but with the help of some sweet apple purée, Baby Bel was clamouring for more. 5/5

Happy Mother's Day!

For my very first Mother's Day, Kev and Baby Bel brought me to a very nice bistro just outside Kev's office. You see, I'd been having cravings for club sandwiches... NO! I'm not pregnant. For those of you who know me, I get cravings for different types of food all the time, when I'm not pregnant that is. Once I had laksa every day for a week. Another time I had to have the double cheese burger from Burger King for every meal.

Anyway, we had a lovely terrace seat. The club sandwich was awesome! Baby Bel also gave me a present. And that was to sit through the ENTIRE lunch of 2 hours without crying or fidgeting. She was such an angel! Unfortunately, we forgot the camera, but here we are back home after our fantastic afternoon together.

What's new on the menu today Mummy?

Mango purée with cereal
Verdict: Baby Bel wasn't too sure of this. Was shown a wrinkly frown and she was reluctant to open her mouth for more. I think it was because it wasn't very ripe so was a little sour. Next time will add some apple purée to it. 2/5

What's new on the menu today Mummy?

Banacado (Banana & Avacado)
Verdict: Baby Bel loved the mashed up Banacado. As this particular dish is uncooked, it's a lot more nutritious for her. However, she couldn't finish everything as it was too rich, so mummy finished it for her and it was DELICIOUS! I think I'll serve this at the next dinner party that we have.
Baby Bel 5/5

What's new on the menu today Mummy?

1. Natural yoghurt with pear compote
Verdict: a quizzical look, failing arms and legs to indicate a YES! Five spoonfuls later, a frown, a grimace, noting the sourish taste... spits everything out... Our girl has delayed taste buds... 2/5

I remember that I had asked one of Kevin's friends what she was feeding her son that day (who was as they say in France, "costo", meaning well rounded and big but not fat). When she said courgette, I nearly fainted. Huh? Courgette? Isn't that like "big people" food? Okay, then I was not a mum, neither was I pregnant. I thought young babies only ate cereal.

So here I am, making courgette for my baby. Yes! Homemade courgette purée so that she'll grow up to be big and strong.

Baby Bel waiting to be fed... Look at her happy face when she spots the food. (Check out her teeth)

2. Sweet potato with homemade courgette (zucchini) purée
Verdict: Grins, smiles, laughs, vigorous arms, legs and head movements, a resounding YUMMY! Give me more courgette tomorrow Mummy!!! 5/5

What's new on the menu today Mummy?

Nestlé Pear with Cereal
Verdict: According to Mathew, Isabelle loved it! She swallowed it really fast and looked sad when it was all gone... 5/5

What's new on the menu today Mummy?

Homemade sweet potato purée
Since this is Mummy's very first homemade purée, Baby Bel is sure to love it! Oh okay, and the fact that it's sweet helps too.

Verdict: This is hands down the best carbohydrate she's ever ever eaten! Don't worry Belle, Mummy will make this often for you. It's also very good for you! 5/5

Ladies and gentlemen, I think we have a gourmand here!

What's new on the menu today Mummy?

Banana with Cereal
Verdict: The smashed and gooey banana mixed in with rice cereal and some milk was gulped and slurrrpped down in no time. Even I wanted to have some! (actually I did have some - it was really fragrant!) I think we have a new favourite fruit here! 5/5

What's new on the menu today Mummy?

Potato with Picard's green beans
Verdict: Met with puzzled expression at first but was quickly won over. With the broccoli episode, I had wondered if I would be wearing the green beans. My fears were obviously unfounded. Although, she wasn't as enthusiastic as with her carrots, at least she doesn't seem to dislike it. YAY for potatoes - it's tough work masking the taste of greens!!! 3/5

What's new on the menu today Mummy?

Peaches with cereal
Verdict: Like all fruits, Baby Bel was begging for more when everything was finished. Her cry of dismay when there was no more was quite cute. Giggle. 5/5

What's new on the menu today Mummy?

1. Picard's potatoes mixed with some milk
Verdict: with its bland taste, like rice cereal, Baby Bel the carbo lover took to it immediately! 5/5

2. Blédina Apple compote with cereal
Verdict: I found this Nestle product rather sweet so added only a little to her cereal. And did she lap it up! 5/5

What's new on the menu today Mummy?

Picard's Carrots
Verdict: It was with no doubt that Baby Bel would love this sweet vegetable. The excitement on her face was such a pleasure to see. And how could we forget the little squirmy body movements that shout FEED ME MORE!!! FASTER!!! FASTER!!! It's so fun feeding her when she's happy with her food. 6/5

Broccoli again???

Broccoli (Take 2)
Silly Mummy later read that broccoli has a very strong taste (duh mummy!) and should only be given after about 2 weeks. How was I supposed to know? I lurve broccoli... except that time when I found a big fat juicy caterpillar in one and was off it for months... Anyway, back to baby. Luckily I found out that I'm supposed to mix 3part nice vegetables (like carrots) or carbohydrates (like potato) with 1 part strong tasting vegetables (like brocolli or green beans). The poor girl! Since Baby Bel already started on Broccoli, decided to go ahead with it and try it with cereal.

Verdict: It's a winner!!! Well, not exactly a winner but at least she took it happily this time. I'd mixed it with 3 parts cereal, 1 part broccoli and with some of her milk (which is kinda sweet). 3/5

Saturday, 12 May 2007

What's new on the menu today Mummy?

Picard's Broccoli
Verdict: EEEEEwwwwww!!!! She tolerated it a little, and while it was going down, it became painstakingly obvious that she was only taking it cuz I was giving it to her... Check out the videoclip after the photos. Is it possible to give a minus score? 0/5

The unsuspecting Baby Bel wondering what the weird contraption she's wearing is...
"Why does Mummy look so suspicious?"

"Hang on Mummy, where's that lovely cereal from yesterday?"

"You mean there's more??? Daddy? Stop taking photos and SAVE ME!!!"

"Where's Mummy going now? Is my torture over? Wonder what I did to deserve this... Maybe she had to change my nappies too many times yesterday. Although, you know there WILL be consequences in my nappy tomorrow...."

"ARRGHHH Mummy's back with MORE!?!" Daddy? Grandmas? Grandpa? Chor Chor? Aunties? Uncle? Anybody???? It must be this dratted blue thing! It's a change-nice-food-into-yucky-green-mess machine!!! GOT TO GET IT OFF!!!

Broco-eewww
